At our stall, which is part of a National Campaign Day organised by the European Movement UK, we will distribute leaflets and ask people to contact their political representatives and urge them to oppose – or at least amend – this Bill.
In its current form the Bill will mean that almost 4,000 EU laws added to the UK statute books after Brexit in 2020 will automatically cease to apply after 31 December 2023, unless ministers specifically retain them. There is a real threat that valuable worker, consumer and environmental protections will be lost or replaced by weaker laws with little or no democratic oversight. The Bill could also mean regulatory chaos for businesses that trade with the EU. It is no surprise that every major business organisation, trade union, and environmental organisation has expressed grave concerns about it.
