As 2024 draws to a close, and we look forward to 2025, it is difficult to view the year ahead without a sense of fear and trepidation.
With Donald Trump about to return as US President, Russia’s assaults on Ukraine being bolstered by weapons and troops from North Korea, and widespread interference in the democratic process across Europe, democracy is reeling under the twin assault of billionaire-funded populism and brutal authoritarianism.
We have to ask ourselves, “Is there any good news?”

Alex Hall Hall is a former UK diplomat, who was ambassador to Georgia from 2013 to 2016. She subsequently served as Brexit Counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington D.C., from 2018 until December 2019, when she resigned stating that she was dismayed at Brexit “half-truths” and the “not totally honest” messages delivered to citizens.
