On the  evening of Tuesday 15 January 2019 members of Cambridge Stays joined thousands of campaigners from across the UK in Parliament Square to call for a People’s Vote on Brexit as MPs debated and Voted on the Government’s Brexit Deal. The cheers that erupted when MPs voted by 432 to 202 to reject the deal showed how delighted we were to see this terrible deal defeated and the road to a People’s Vote on Brexit opened.

Cambridge Stays welcomes the vote, and in particular thanks local MPs Daniel Zeichner and Heidi Allen for defending the interests of their constituents and country by voting down a deal that would have only prolonged the Brexit chaos.

It’s clear now that no version of Brexit enjoys as much support from the people of the UK as staying in the EU, just as it has always been clear that no Brexit deal comes close to being as good as EU membership for protecting the security, global influence and economic prosperity of the UK.

Theresa May calls for MPS to reach a consensus, but doesn’t yet appear to have learned that this will require compromise from her. From her “citizens of nowhere” speech to the Tory party conference in 2016 to Tuesday’s vote we have seen her ignore and dismiss attempts to engage in meaningful dialogue by opposition politicians, the national parliaments and assemblies, and groups such as The 3 Million and British in Europe.  A “soft Brexit” consensus, which in any case would be a far weaker relationship than our current EU membership on every measure, will likely be rejected by more than a third of her own MPs, and her increasingly hardline pro-Brexit Party members.

With the failure on Wednesday of a motion of no confidence ruling out a general election in the near future, and Parliament unable to agree on any version of Brexit that isn’t either politically or economically ruinous (or both!), there is one option left; a new referendum with the option to stay in the EU.

Opinion polls show that a clear majority of those expressing an opinion now back staying in the EU, and a People’s Vote. If MPs cannot stop act in the interests of the people by stopping Brexit themselves, their duty is to let the people decide.

For the sake of the future of our young people, who overwhelmingly reject Brexit, we ask our representatives in Parliament to now support a People’s Vote on Brexit with the option to stay in the EU.

Contact your MP today and ask then to end the chaos of Brexit by giving the people of the UK a final say, an informed say, a People’s Vote with the option to stay in the EU!
